I always told my patients in pain clinic to take an epsom salt (pure magnesium) bath at night. The magnesium gets absorbed through the skin and doubles as a muscle relaxant and heart optimizer.
As an anesthesiologist/intensivist trained at Stanford, we would give 1 gram of Magnesium for all cases of acute arrhythmia, most commonly atrial fibrillation. It was a pure knee-jerk response. No labs, no thinking. Just give mag. Nice walk down memory lane, thank you.
Need a po dose of mag? Try dark chocolate or an avocado, nuts, legumes, or tofu:)
The consensus amongst Vitamin-D3 advocates is that the next most important nutrient is Magnesium. When taking higher super physiological doses of Vitamin-D3 of 20'000IU=500ug or more daily many recommend taking oral Magnesium to the point of gut tolerance to get the benefit of the VItamin-D3. MgO is not favored due to very poor absorption.
It would be lovely if you can do a post on your take on Vitamin-D3.
I like to point people at the long running VitaminDwiki
for easy access to much information. Then for those that want to look at my personal recommendations based on rather too much reading on a narrow topic I have them on my bio page.
I have found that placing a spoonful of magnesium chloride (magnesium oil ingredient) or magnesium sulfate (Epsom salts, foot soak) on my hand, wetting it and rubbing it on a cramped calf muscle for 30 seconds cleared it up immediately for me on each of 4 occasions that I have had it after a protracted day of walking and then relaxing at home. I discovered this one day when I was in agony and could not find my wife's 'magnesium oil', my wife finds that rubbing 'magnesium oil' on her legs after a lot of walking will prevent cramping in the night.
We both take magnesium supplement, I have one tablet, my wife takes 6 to 8 spread during the day to effectively mitigate most of her ME/CFS and/or fibromyalgia related aches, we both take Vitamin-D3 according to the guidelines I have researched that I linked above. Our diet is likely deficient in Magnesium and in the Nordic region we know there is little hope of getting adequate VItamin-D3.
Yes. Many of the enzymes involved with Vitamin-D3 contain magnesium. Deficiency in magnesium prevents the full and speedy utilisation of the Vitamin-D3 slowing down the protective and healing potential.
Magnesium is also needed for many other metabolic functions. The diagram on the following page should be in every classroom.
In my reading Magnesium comes up as something to help prevent damage from EMFs. Along with rosemary and other foods high in antioxidants.
So gracious of our Father in Heaven to provide these wonderful foods and minerals to protect us. He knows the future and will provide for his children!
About a year ago I started feeling a very uncomfortable electrical surge in my body around 8pm. I intuitively started taking an epsom salt bath around that time of night. And I don’t have that feeling anymore.
The city must have some sort of electrical surge happening around that time. Or maybe that is when the city is getting the data from the stupid smart meter. I now have a faraday cage on that.
Discovered Dean and Levy a few years ago and since then the use for Mg+ continues to expand. Thank you for providing this perspective and the memories from the ‘old world’…
I know many people are deficient in magnesium. How does magnesium affect people with the mthfr gene mutation? Does it have anything to do with the methylation process?
Magnesium is indirectly connected to the MTHFR (methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase) gene mutation. The MTHFR gene is involved in the methylation cycle, which is critical for many body processes, including DNA repair, detoxification, and neurotransmitter production. People with MTHFR mutations often have difficulties with methylation, leading to various health problems, including issues with homocysteine metabolism and deficiencies in folate and other B vitamins.
#1 Magnesium plays a crucial role in many enzymatic reactions in the body, including those involved in methylation. Specifically, magnesium acts as a cofactor for enzymes that help convert inactive forms of vitamins into their active, usable forms. For people with MTHFR mutations, magnesium is essential because:
A) 1. Supports Detoxification: Magnesium aids in the function of enzymes responsible for detoxification, a process that can be compromised in individuals with MTHFR mutations.
B) Patients with MTHFR, when not being treated correctly, will always have an elevated homocysteine level, which can lead to stroke and heart attack, and magnesium can help regulate these levels indirectly by supporting proper enzyme function.
C) Methylation: Magnesium, being essential for methylation pathways, offers hope. Ensuring adequate magnesium levels can help optimize the efficiency of these pathways in individuals with MTHFR mutations, potentially leading to health improvements.
I rec. Magnesium Lotion: Magnesium is easily absorbed through the skin.https://www.ancient-minerals.com. Ancient Minerals is the company that we are looking for. It is still “mom & pop”. It is not a corporation, and it is American-made. For me, I like the lotion. After showering, I rub magnesium along my arterial points and the lymphatic system when the pores are wide open. I also use it at night along my neck, face, and feet. I find that I sleep better. Magnesium can be taken at night, but at higher dosages, it can cause loose stool.
Thanks for your information. Australian readers might like to know that there is an Australian product called Karma Rub which is a natural liquid magnesium.
Thank you for your response. I will start implementing magnesium into my daily routine. Hopefully it will help lower the homocysteine levels.
I have read that stress can affect people with mthfr in a significant way. I hope that you can write a substack someday about how stress affects people with mthfr.
Sorry, wrong spelling. Magnesium can be taken orally, but it can cause loose stool at higher dosages. Great idea. Because MTHFR is so complex, I will write about it and its relationship to stress. I usually write on the weekends. Have a Blessed day.
Question: My husband took magnesium citrate several times, years ago, maybe decades, and had no response. None. He took 8 oz, entire bottle. The kind you get in drug store in green bottle for constipation.
What might explain that?
He had cardiac bypass last month, four blockages. He’s fit, trim, avid runner, no risk factors. Standard Labs excellent. Could it be related to inability to digest/absorb magnesium?
Magnesium should be taken as a lotion, and you can use it more without the side effects of diarrhea.https://www.ancient-minerals.com. I like the lotion. I put it on my skin at the arterial points. After showering, when the pores are wide opened, I rubbed it all over my skin along the lymphatic lines. I also use it at night for sleep. By using it transdermally #1, you can get more Magnesium into the cells—#2. You won’t experience diarrhea. I also like Ancient Minerals because it is still a “mom-pop” store, not a corporation, and not coming from China.
DFE (Dietary Folate Equivalents) is a system used to standardize the measurement of folate from food and supplements. It accounts for synthetic folic acid and food-based folate.
• One mcg of DFE is equal to 1 mcg of naturally occurring folate from food or 0.6 mcg of folic acid from supplements or fortified foods. Therefore, it does contain synthetic folic acid. Even that tiny amount of folic acid cannot be converted to folate in patients with MTHFR. For MTHFR patients, I recommend methylated folate purely.
Any form of magnesium is okay, but I recommend staying away from Magnesium oxide. Magnesium is a positive-charge element. When combined with an Oxide (a negative-charge molecule in the form of O-, the body will take up the magnesium, but the byproduct of splitting the compound results in an accumulation of an oxidative molecule in the body. Great question!

Thank you!! I have been using 3 different types in small doses.
